The Native Plant Society of Northeastern Ohio

The Native Plant Society of Northeastern Ohio Three major sources for identifying plants are books, online resources, and pictures presented on our web site.

The picture portion of this web page is still under construction, but the books and online resources listed below provide a complete guide to identifying native plants.

Identifying Native Plants

Whether you are just beginning your quest in plant identification or are working on in-depth research, there are many options available.  Books are available at all learning levels, from simple wildflower books arranged by color, to advanced taxonomic sources arranged by plant characteristics, as well as websites that provide links helpful for plant identification.  There also is a large range of plant pictures available from our members and from many other sources on the web.

Online Sources For Plant Identification

For Ohio

Information on Ohio trees is accessible from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR).

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources lists the rare plants in Ohio in its Ohio Natural Heritage Database.  Ohio rare plants are also listed by Ohio county.

For the United States and Beyond:

The Flora of North America is a comprehensive reference source.  Its 30 volumes provide information on the names, taxonomic relationships, continent-wide distributions, and morphological characteristics of all plants native and naturalized found in North America north of Mexico.  It is the scientific community's vehicle for synthesizing and presenting botanical information.

The PLANTS Database of the US Dept of Agriculture provides standardized information about the plants of the U.S.  It includes names, plant symbols, checklists, distributional data, species abstracts, characteristics, images, crop information, automated tools, onward Web links, and references.

The Integrated Taxonomic Information System (ITIS) gives authoritative information about the scientific classification of plants, animals, fungi, and microbes of North America and the world.

Computer-driven plant identification:  Unlike a traditional plant identification key that provides you with only two choices at each step (a dichotomous key), the cutting edge polyclave keys from the National Plant Data Center let you select multiple characters simultaneously.  This makes more character data available in the key and minimizes the number of steps it takes to identify a plant.
The Ladybird Johnson Wildflower Center has a Native Plant Database where you can search for native plants by scientific name, common name, or family.

Pictures of Native Plants

See our Gallery of Native Plants, containing pictures taken during walks of our Society, arranged into eight plant groups:

Early Spring Summer Wetlands Woody Plants
Late Spring Fall Meadows Non-Flowering Plants

These pictures were taken by Ami Horowitz and Tom Sampliner, members of our Society.

Our Gallery is intended as a sample of the many plants found in Ohio in these categories.  In addition to our Gallery of Native Plants, there are many other good sources of pictures of native plants on the web, including the following sites.

The Ohio Prairie Association’s website has pictures of plants of the Ohio prairies.

The U. S. Department of Agriculture provides a wide array of plant pictures and drawings in its PLANTS database.

The Vascular Plant Image Library includes images of hundreds of Ohio plants, as well as thousands of other plants from around the world.

For images of some particular groups of plants, see these sites: fungi, weeds, introduced (this site gives a listing of plants not native to North America), and Ohio’s 10 most invasive non-native plants.
